March 2010 Archives

Mark was born in 1958 and grew up in Berkshire. He went to school at Bradfield College, near Reading, and then studied for a degree in Economics at the London School of Economics.

Mark's career was in retail, working for small and large companies, before he opened his own chain of shoe shops, which he sold in 2007. Aside from politics, Mark likes to keep fit with running, cycling and trekking. He has run several marathons, completed the Coast to Coast Walk and the Two Moors Way in Devon for charity, and cycled from Bangkok to Angkor Wat for the Cambodian Red Cross.

Naomi was born and bred in London, but lived in Northern Ireland from the age of 10 to 18. It was there that she realised she was a Liberal and began campaigning for a more tolerant and equal society while still at school.

She was educated at Coleraine High School before winning a scholarship to Methodist College Belfast where her passion for politics was nurtured and she chaired an inter-faith session on the future of policing in Northern Ireland, feeding back their recommendations to the Patten Commission.

Robin Meltzer is the local choice for Kensington. Robin lives in the constituency and has been campaigning on local issues for several years.

Robin ran the successful Liberal Democrat campaign for last year's Council byelection in Notting Hill, winning more votes than the Conservatives and Labour combined.

A local paper wrote that thanks to Robin's campaign, the "cosy consensus between the other two parties" has been broken.

A former BBC television producer, Robin is a member of Friends of Holland Park and of Liberty, the human rights organisation.

Robin said: "Kensington deserves an MP who actually lives here and stands up residents who have been taken for granted for far too long."

PROTECTING OUR LOCAL SHOPS & SMALL BUSINESSES

Kensington's blend of independent shops is under threat from chain stores. The Liberal Democrats would give local authorities new power to prevent areas like Portobello Road from being taken over by clone shops. Robin Meltzer is campaigning against the Council's unfair and inconsistent planning decisions especially the waving through of controversial plans to replace market stalls with chain stores.

ACTION ON HOUSING

There is a shortfall of 3950 affordable homes per year in our Borough, so Robin Meltzer iscampaigning for all new developments to include affordable housing. "The list of upcoming developments waved through by the Council with no affordable housing on-site is shameful," says Robin. "The Commonwealth Institute, the Odeon Kensington, Holland Park playground - all these developments will contain only the mostexpensive property. No homes for teachers, police officers, nurses and other local key workers. We must reverse this trend."

ACTION ON SCHOOLS

Robin Meltzer was the only candidate to speak out against the Council's decision to SELL OFF the playground of Holland Park School, the only Comprehensive school in the Borough, reducing the size of the overall site. The resulting development will tower over Holland Park.Robin also led the Lib Dem campaign for a new community secondary school in North Kensington. The new school is finally going ahead, probably in Walmer Road.

I have been selected to stand as the Parliamentary Candidate for Hammersmith when the next general election is called.

As your Liberal Democrat Candidate I have a vision for Hammersmith. Not a vision where the property prices are the 4th highest in London but where over 40% of housing stock do not meet national 'decent homes' standard. Nor one where increasing number of parents have to send their children to schools outside of the borough because of their lack of faith in the local schools (59% of children leave school with less than 5 good GCSEs including Maths and English).

I am honoured to have been asked by local Liberal Democrats to stand as Parliamentary Candidate for the new Chelsea and Fulham Constituency when the next General Election is called.

Chelsea and Fulham is home to some of the World's wealthiest people and to some of Britain's most disadvantaged people. Your local MP must therefore support both sustainable jobs here and fair life chances for all local people.
